You have been raised to life with Christ, so set your hearts on the things that are in heaven, where Christ sits on his throne at the right side of God. Colossians 3:1 (GNT)
My attic is full to overflowing, and my closet is a jumbled mess. I have a lot of stuff. When my closets and cabinets get full, it’s time to clean out. I usually have a garage sale or donate to Goodwill. Some people rent storage units in order to keep all their stuff. As a matter of fact, the self storage industry in the United States generated $27.2 billion in annual revenues in 2014 (selfstorage.org).
I’m thinking that there are a lot of people like me, who like their stuff.
Our stuff brings us comfort, and makes us comfortable. It’s there when we need it. It’s a part of us. And yet, scripture tells us to set our hearts on the things above, heavenly things, not on our earthly stuff.
As much as I would like to practice this each day, it’s hard for me. I’m a visual person. I’ve never seen heaven. I can’t grasp how to seek heavenly things.
And yet the apostle Paul explains it so simply:
Set your hearts on the things that are in heaven. Colossians 3:1
What’s in heaven? Christ, who is seated next to God. Now, I haven’t seen Christ face to face either, but I’ve experienced His love through the hugs of my friends. His kindness has been freely given to me by strangers offering a helping hand. I know Jesus Christ through His word. I know He loved me enough to die for me.
When we look for Christ in our ordinary everyday, seek Him in the scriptures, and contemplate His Word, we will be setting our minds on heavenly things.
And you know what? It’s not as hard as I thought!
